Sustainability
The migration from Mosaic to Fresco is an opportunity to make your website more sustainable.
By reviewing your site’s design, content and the files hosted on it, you can reduce the overall size of your website – potentially impacting the charging tier your site falls into.
Fresco has a charging tier where larger sites will pay more. Your site’s size will be mostly determined by number of pages, but also the size of the files hosted on it. Eg. PDFs, images, videos etc.
Review the guidance on How to delete content in Mosaic and consider these areas to update your website.
Reducing your site’s size also makes it more eco-friendly – by minimising your site’s size you reduce the energy servers need to power it.
Design
One way to make a website sustainable is through efficient user-centric web design and prioritising static content. So take this moment to consider if your website does what it needs to efficiently, in a way that is easy to use and helps your users’ journeys as they navigate your site.
Not only is this a good exercise in improving a user’s journey so they find the information they need quickly; but the less time someone spends on a site, the more sustainable that site will be.
Page numbers
Archiving and deleting pages are the easiest way to reduce your site’s overall size. By removing no longer relevant and out-of-date pages, like events, blogs or articles, you’ll reduce your site’s size (as well as speed up the migration and review process).
You can also consider condensing or combining some of your pages. Copy should be short and purposeful, so removing any excess text or moving to it another existing page, will create a smaller and more sustainable website.
Documents
Consider the documents in your library or hosted on your site, and if any are duplicated, no longer relevant or no don’t need to be public facing, they could be deleted. It might also be possible to compress or reduce them to reduce their memory size.
Images
Consider removing any unnecessary images. This will reduce your site’s size but also improve your pages’ loading times.
Where images are necessary, make sure images are saved in the most efficient formats (photos are best as jpgs, graphics as pngs, icons as svgs). Keep images as small as possible without compromising their aesthetic and run them through compression tools to reduce their size. An ideal size for a web image is under 500KB, with 200KB usually considered optimum.
Videos
Fresco will not support video hosting so videos will need to be uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube and then embedded on your page(s).
Removing videos improves page load times, reduces space taken up in your media library and will also lsimplify a user’s experience of the site.
